Canadians are proud to hold one of the
most prized citizenships in the world. Six times in the last decade,
Canada has been ranked number one by the United Nations Human
Development Index as the best country in the world in which to live.
Canada has become the destination of choice for many of the world’s
immigrants because it is a country of incredible resources, vast
geography, diverse peoples, abundant opportunities, accessible
health and social services, and because of its proximity to the
United States. Every year about 150,000 people become new citizens
of Canada.
Permanent adult residents wishing to obtain status as a Canadian
citizen must fill out the Application for Canadian Citizenship for
Adults. Supporting documentation may also be required for some
citizenship applicants. A test will also be necessary for applicants
under the age of 55 to test their knowledge of Canada. Furthermore,
applicants who have a criminal past, or are facing criminal charges
may not be eligible for Canadian citizenship.
