Canada’s immigration department released new wait‑time estimates on September 3, showing that several permanent‑residence and citizenship streams are now taking longer. The Federal Skilled Worker stream under Express Entry, spousal sponsorship for partners living outside Canada, and the search for citizenship records each added a month to their published processing times. At the same time, the Parents and Grandparents Program and in‑country spousal sponsorship both shaved a month off their timelines.
For economic immigration, the Federal Skilled Worker queue grew by 1,400 cases, pushing the average wait from six to seven months. The Canadian Experience Class stayed steady at six months, while no data were released for the Federal Skilled Trades Program. Provincial nominee applications also saw mixed results: enhanced nominations remain at seven months, base nominations at thirteen months, even as the inventory for enhanced cases rose by 1,000 and the base pool fell by 900.
Family sponsorship figures illustrate a similar pattern. Applicants sponsoring a spouse or common‑law partner from abroad now face an 18‑month wait, one month longer than before, while those sponsoring a partner from within Canada see a slight reduction to 26 months. The Parents and Grandparents Program improved by a month, moving to 28 months. In Quebec, the only noticeable change was a one‑month drop for parent and grandparent sponsorship, with all other categories unchanged.
Citizenship processing is largely stable, except for the search of citizenship records, which increased from 17 to 18 months. Overall, the inventory for citizenship grants fell by about 1,100 applications, keeping the standard 12‑month target unchanged.
The data also highlight the existence of Bridging Open Work Permits (BOWP) for many applicants who already live in Canada. These permits let people keep working while they wait for a final decision, provided they apply before their current work permit expires. Both regular permanent‑residence candidates and certain provincial nominees can take advantage of this measure, which began in June 2026.
Understanding the difference between published processing times and service standards is essential. Processing times are estimates based on past performance or current workload, while service standards are the government’s internal targets. Neither guarantees a specific outcome for any individual case, and factors such as document completeness or extra information requests can shift timelines.
Given the rising wait periods for several high‑demand streams, applicants may find it harder to plan career moves, family reunification, or study timelines. Navigating these shifting estimates often benefits from professional insight that can help applicants organize their files, anticipate possible delays, and choose the most realistic pathway forward.
