Canadian citizens and permanent residents who wish to bring an adult child to Canada can do so by using the dependent‑child sponsorship route.
The law defines a dependent child in two ways. First, anyone under 22 who is not married or in a common‑law partnership qualifies automatically. Second, a person 22 or older can still be considered dependent if they cannot support themselves because of a physical or mental condition that began before they turned 22.
Once the child meets one of these definitions, the only other hurdle is admissibility – a clean criminal record, acceptable medical status and no security concerns are required.
The sponsor must be at least 18 years old, be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or registered Indian, and must plan to live in Canada with the child. Permanent‑resident sponsors need to stay in Canada for the whole sponsorship period. They also must not be disqualified for financial reasons, criminality, or past immigration violations.
If the adult child already has their own dependent children, the sponsor must meet higher income thresholds to cover three generations.
Financial support is a core promise. For children under 22, the sponsor must provide for up to ten years or until the child turns 25, whichever comes first. For older dependent children, the commitment lasts three years. The sponsor must cover basic needs and any social assistance the child receives, which the government will later seek to recover from the sponsor. In return, the adult child gains access to publicly‑funded health insurance.
The application begins on the immigration website under the “Sponsoring your spouse, partner or dependent child” section. Applicants select “my dependent child,” specify the child’s country of residence, and download the checklist and forms. The paperwork can be completed personally or with an authorized representative – a licensed lawyer or a certified immigration consultant. Accuracy is vital; even small mistakes can cause a refusal.
Processing times vary by country, ranging from seven months for India to nineteen months for Canada, Nigeria and the Philippines.
Overall, the program offers a clear pathway for families to reunite, provided sponsors understand the responsibilities and meet the eligibility rules.
