The Canadian government announced on July 15, 2026 that it will stop accepting new interest‑to‑sponsor forms for the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP). This means Canadian citizens and permanent residents can no longer start a new application to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada as permanent residents, unless the policy is changed later. The pause applies to all new sponsorship requests, but the department will keep working on the 50,900 applications that were already submitted. Its goal is to approve about 15,000 of those cases in 2026, as part of a plan to admit the same number each year through 2028.
The PGP has always been a lottery‑based family reunification route. Since its first intake in 2020, the program received more than 200,000 expressions of interest, but only a small share received invitations to apply. No new intake has been opened since that first round, and the current halt means the chance to enter the lottery is gone for the foreseeable future. For those who already have a pending file, processing times remain long – roughly 18 months for applicants who plan to live outside Quebec and up to 54 months for those who intend to settle in Quebec.
The government’s press release suggests that families who cannot use the PGP should look at the Super Visa option. The Super Visa lets parents and grandparents visit Canada for up to five years at a time, with a ten‑year validity on the visa itself. To qualify, the visitor needs a letter of invitation, health insurance for the whole stay, and a sponsor who meets a minimum income level. The visitor must also convince a border officer that they will leave Canada when the authorized period ends.
While the suspension removes a direct path to permanent residence, the Super Visa still offers a way for families to stay together for many years. However, the requirements – especially the financial proof and insurance purchase – can be complex and costly. Applicants must also be prepared for the usual temporary‑resident entry checks.
In this environment, navigating the mix of halted family sponsorship and the conditions of the Super Visa becomes a detailed task. Understanding the exact timelines, income thresholds, and insurance options can mean the difference between a smooth family visit and a delayed or denied entry. This kind of complexity is exactly where careful planning and professional insight can turn a difficult situation into a manageable one.
