The latest weekly update from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada shows that processing estimates for temporary residence are moving upward for several key categories. For work permits, applicants from the United States now face an extra week compared with the previous week, while those already inside Canada continue to see a slight decline.
Study permits show a similar pattern: a one‑week increase for candidates applying from within Canada and for those in Nigeria, while other nations remain steady. The most dramatic shift appears in the super visa program, where U.S. applicants experience a rise of more than seven weeks and the Philippines sees an increase of about three weeks. Only Pakistan enjoys a notable reduction, with its super visa processing time dropping by over five weeks.
These figures sit alongside the department’s service standards, which set a target of 60 days for applications submitted from outside Canada and 120 days for those filed inside the country. The new estimates, however, are not guarantees; they reflect historical data and current inventory, meaning individual cases can move faster or slower depending on complexity, document requests, and additional checks.
In the first seven months of 2026, IRCC processed over 1.8 million applications, yet more than 394 000 remain pending as of the end of July.
Understanding the difference between processing times and service standards is essential. Processing times give a rough idea of how long a fresh application might take, while service standards represent the department’s performance goal for 80 % of cases under normal conditions. Factors such as the volume of applications, staffing levels, and the need for extra verification can push a case beyond the estimated window.
The weekly nature of these updates means the numbers can change quickly, with the next set expected around September 23. For anyone planning to work, study, or visit family in Canada, the rising timelines suggest a need for careful preparation. Gathering complete documentation, responding promptly to any requests, and anticipating possible delays can help keep a case on track.
In a landscape where waiting periods are extending, having a clear strategy and expert insight becomes a valuable way to reduce uncertainty and improve the chances of a smooth outcome.
