Canada has just announced a major boost for doctors who earned their medical degrees abroad. The federal health department is putting $20 million into a program called Practice Ready Ontario, or PRO, which shortens the route to a full Ontario medical licence. Instead of spending two years in a traditional residency, an experienced internationally trained physician can complete a 12‑week clinical assessment and, after a three‑year supervised practice period, sit for the final certification exam. In total, the whole process can finish in under a year, compared with the usual three to five years.
To join PRO, a doctor must already be a permanent resident or citizen of Canada, and must meet basic standards for education, work experience and language skills. The program now includes a special stream for French‑speaking doctors, helping the province meet the needs of its Francophone communities. After completing the program, participants sign a three‑year return‑of‑service agreement, during which they work in Ontario’s underserved northern or rural areas and in French‑speaking towns. This service requirement ensures that the extra doctors go where they are most needed, improving access to primary care for patients who have long waited for a family doctor.
Health Canada expects the new funding to create 50 additional PRO positions each year for the next four years, aiming to have all new participants practicing in Ontario by 2028‑2029. The move is part of a broader strategy that also funds projects for internationally educated nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Earlier this year, the government opened a permanent‑residence stream for physicians with Canadian work experience and added 5,000 extra immigration slots for health‑care workers. Together with faster licensing rules that now allow doctors from other provinces to start work in Ontario within days, the PRO expansion represents a coordinated effort to ease labour shortages in the health sector.
For doctors who have trained abroad, the timing could not be better. The combination of faster licensing, guaranteed job placements and financial support means a clear, accelerated path to a stable medical career in Canada. It also offers the chance to serve communities that lack sufficient health services, making a tangible difference while building a professional future. Prospective physicians should consider whether this fast‑track route matches their goals and circumstances, and explore how the new program could shape their next steps.
