Ontario has changed its immigration point system to reward foreign workers who earn $80,000 a year or more. The change applies to the Ontario Workforce Priority Stream, the only route that currently offers provincial nomination for permanent residence in the province.
Under the new rule, candidates in the top earnings bracket receive ten points instead of eight, while those earning between $70,000 and $79,999 keep eight points and lower brackets receive six, four, or no points. The points are added automatically to a candidate’s profile, based on the annual income shown on a recent Canada Revenue Agency Notice of Assessment.
The higher score improves the chance that the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program will select the applicant for an invitation to apply for a provincial nomination. Once nominated, the candidate can ask the federal government for Canadian permanent residency.
The adjustment was announced on October 7, 2026 and took effect two days later. It follows a broader overhaul of Ontario’s immigration streams that began earlier in the year, when the province cancelled all previous permanent‑residence pathways and introduced the Workforce Priority Stream in June.
The next phase of the overhaul will bring new streams for healthcare workers, entrepreneurs, and people with exceptional talent, although dates for those programs have not yet been set.
The new points boost is especially relevant for high‑earning professionals, self‑employed physicians, and foreign workers who already have a job offer in Ontario. By rewarding higher earnings, the province signals that it wants skilled talent that can contribute economically and fill labor gaps.
For applicants who meet the income threshold, the extra points can move them from the middle of the ranking list to the top, increasing the likelihood of receiving a nomination before the intake closes.
This move also aligns Ontario with other provinces that use earnings as a factor in their selection models.
As the province continues to refine its immigration system, individuals with strong earning records should examine whether this pathway matches their career plans and personal goals. It may be the right moment to explore how the new scoring could open a faster route to living and working in Canada.
